GRADUATING AWARDS – 2021
There are a number of awards available for graduating students only (December 2020, May or August 2021, degree completion dates). The majority of the award applications will go through the online scholarship portal. The application deadline is April 23, 2021. To apply online:
- Log onto go.ocean.edu/scholarships
- Select “Apply Now” on the right side of the screen
- Select the blue “Sign In” button on the top right of the screen
- Select the blue “Sign In With Your Ocean Connect Account.” You will sign in with your Ocean Connect credentials.
- Begin the application – make sure you answer “YES” to the first question – “I am applying for Graduating Awards.”
- Answer all the General Application questions and select “Save and Keep Editing” to come back and complete later, or “Finish and Submit” to move onto the Graduating Awards Application questions.
- Once in the Graduating Awards Application, answer the questions and “Save and Keep Editing” to come back and complete later, or “Finish and Submit” to complete.
- You will only need to fill out one application for the online opportunities. Your answers, along with information pulled from our systems, will place your application into all the award queues that you might be eligible for.
- There is one additional “Apply To” scholarship online that will appear after you submit your Graduating Award application – The Philip G. Zitelli Scholarship in Leadership. This award is up to $5,000 to a graduating student who has demonstrated a leadership role within the OCC community or in the community at large and will be transferring to a four-year institution. Details of the scholarship can be found online. You will need to submit additional information in order to be considered for this award.

2021 Graduating Awards
These awards are available for application through the online scholarship portal.
DOLLIE AND HARRY DAVID SUSSNA SCHOLARSHIP: $1,500 awarded to three outstanding students transferring to a four-year institution. (Potential Renewal: $2,000 upon re-enrollment at a four-year institution.)
D’ONOFRIO FOUNDATION AWARD: $2,000 is awarded to a student who demonstrates aptitude in the study of Health/Medicine, with the intent to pursue a career in a related field, with a 3.0 GPA or better.
DOUGLAS C. KING MEMORIAL GRADUATE FUND: $1,000 awarded to a graduate of the Criminal Justice program pursuing a four-year degree in Criminal Justice. Student should demonstrate leadership, scholarship and need.
JOSEPH J. QUATTROCK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 awarded to a graduating “Non-Traditional” student in good standing who has clearly demonstrated signs of academic potential in the areas of Business Administration, Computer Science or related curriculum and will be transferring to a four-year institution.
LAVERNE WEIGOLD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 total is awarded to outstanding students demonstrating scholarship abilities and an interest in the area of English or the Humanities.
ALFRED AND BARBARA LONGO GRADUATIONS SCHOLARSHIP: Donated by Dr. Alfred and Mrs. Barbara Longo, $1,000 is awarded to a graduating student who has enrolled in a four year institution to complete a bachelors degree in Psychology or Education.
OCEAN COUNTY COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 each awarded to three graduating students who have achieved outstanding academic performance at Ocean County College and who will continue their education in the Kean Ocean program.
OCEAN COUNTY SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS AWARD: $1,000 is awarded to a student for outstanding achievement in Engineering.
OCEAN COUNTY SHERIFF FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 is awarded to a graduate of the Criminal Justice program pursuing a four-year degree in Criminal Justice who has demonstrated academic success and service to the community.
WILLIAM T. HIERING SCHOLARSHIP: $2,000 is awarded to an outstanding student who has completed 64 credits at Ocean County College and maintained a 4.0 GPA
PHILIP G. ZITELLI SCHOLARSHIP IN LEADERSHIP: up to $5,000 awarded to a graduating student who has demonstrated a leadership role within the OCC community or the community at large and will be transferring to a four-year institution. FAFSA completion, essay and letter of recommendation required for this scholarship. Details online.
PRESIDENT’S LEADERSHIP TEAM SCHOLARSHIP: $1000 is awarded to a non-traditional student who has demonstrated commitment to successfully completing their academic requirements and persistence in managing demanding outside responsibilities not experienced by traditional students and will continue their education at a four year institution.
ROBERT J. NOVINS SCHOLARSHIP FOR CONTINUED STUDY: $2,000 awarded to graduating students continuing in a four-year institution, majoring in Political Science and Government Studies, with a 3.0 GPA or Better.
CARLEEN STERLING ORSI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $1,000 awarded to two graduates transferring to a four-year college or university. ($500 renewable for a second year.)
CATHERINE DON DIEGO SCHOLARSHIP FOR EXCELLENCE IN HUMANITIES: Funded by a generous donation for the estate of the late Catherine Don Diego, an English Professor. $500 each is awarded to two graduating students who have excelled in and are pursuing a major in Literature, Art, Music or Theatre.
DR. ALBERT SOCOL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $250 each is awarded to two outstanding students in mathematics.
DONALD W. SMITH SCHOLARSHIP: Donated by D.W. Smith Associates, $500 each is awarded to two graduating students pursuing education in civil engineering, surveying, planning landscape design and/or environmental services.
JOYCE PREVITE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: $750 is awarded to an outstanding graduate of the Nursing Program who has maintained a 3.0 GPA or better.
OCEAN COUNTY CULTURAL & HERITAGE COMMISSION ART AWARD: Donated by the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a certificate and $500 is awarded to an outstanding student in the field of Art.
THE PAUL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP (IN MEMORY OF JOYCE PREVITE): $525 is awarded to a student who demonstrates aptitude in the study of Nursing with the intent to pursue a career in Nursing.
PAULINE S. MILLER AWARD (HISTORY): Donated by the Ocean County Cultural & Heritage Commission, a certificate and $500 is awarded to an outstanding student in the field of History.
SHELDON LINZ MEMORIAL AWARD: $1,000 awarded to an outstanding Photography/Visual Arts major.
ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF OCEAN COUNTY COLLEGE AWARDS (In memory of Thomas J. Brady): Student government presents $200 to graduating students displaying consistently strong record of involvement in the co-curricular program.
JENNIE HORNE CECE AWARD: Donated by her children, an award of $350 is given to a person displaying extraordinary dedication to academia and family.
JOHN MORRISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: $250 awarded to a graduating student transferring to a four year institution. Who has been an active participant of the Speech and Theatre Club and/or participated in OCC’s Performing Arts programs.
THE BOTEIN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP: $225 Donated by Dr. Ali Botein-Furrevig, Director of the OCC Center for Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights, in blessed memory of her parents, Ruth and Herman Botein; grandparents Dr. Herman Botein and Sarah Leonson-Botein; Aunt Ethel Botein-Webster; Uncle Samuel Webster, and Uncle NY State Supreme Court Justice Bernard Botein. Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in either Holocaust Studies, Jewish Studies Law or Social Justice
ALLAN PETER FURREVIG SCHOLARSHIP: $225 Donated by Dr. Ali Botein-Furrevig, Director of the OCC Center for Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights, in blessed memory of her husband, Allan Peter Furrevig. Awarded to a student pursuing studies in either Finance, Corporate Management, Business Analysis, Banking Operations or Investments and Trust Management.
THE CHARLES READ MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP: in memory of Charles Read, OCC’s first professor of Music, taught at OCC from 1966-untill 2000 and was the founder and director of the OCC Community Chorus. $100 is awarded to a graduating student with a 3.5 or higher in all music classes and is accepted into a four year institution as a Music Major.
MEALS ON WHEELS OF OCEAN COUNTY (IN MEMORY OF VIRGINIA AND JACK LAMPING): $250 is awarded to a student interested in pursuing a career in public affairs, policy, or government.
NORCIA ASPIRING ATTORNEY AWARD: Donated by OCC Alum, RJ Norcia Class of 2010, $250 is awarded to a graduating student who has shown a demonstrated interest in attending law school and becoming a practicing attorney in the State of New Jersey.
