To the College Community:
I, along with the Ocean County College Board of Trustees, stand with the New Jersey Council of County Colleges and its member schools to denounce the tragic and brutal death of Mr. George Floyd and the ongoing racial and ethnic injustice in our nation. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Mr. Floyd’s family and friends.
Across the country people are sad and angry, and we are experiencing those feelings as well. We are already going through an incredibly difficult period, a time when many are mourning friends and family lost to COVID-19, are worried about finances and lost jobs, and are concerned about the future.
We stand in solidarity with the meaningful, peaceful protests that took place in our Ocean County community and many others, but are saddened by the violent confrontations and random destruction of property that occurred in many of our greatest cities, hurting innocent people and businesses.
New Jersey’s county colleges are rooted in the core values of equality, equity, and opportunity. Ocean County College seeks to be a greater part of the solution. We value all people and embrace the opportunity to stop hatred and promote peace through education, continuous civil discourse, and by doing all we can to ensure that all members of our community know they are welcome on our campus.
It is normal in difficult times for people to need to talk to others about what they are feeling. If you need to talk to someone, please make use of the resources in The Counseling Center. These services remain available during remote operations.
In a civil society, we are all responsible for the preservation of the rule of law and the advancement of social justice. Ocean County College will not stand for racial intolerance. We must continue to work together to provide a safe, inclusive environment for all. The members of the Board of Trustees and I remain committed to these values and hope you will do what you can to eliminate racism, sexism, and other negative influences on our progression as a college, a community, a state, and a nation.
I encourage you to review the Civility Statement, which for many years has described our expectation for considerate and principled conduct at Ocean County College.
Jon H. Larson, Ph.D.
